The Internet is a great place to share information, get hired to do a commercial and get asked to be a jazz diva.
That's what happened to Maureen Washington, former Prince George singer songwriter, who moved to Victoria three years ago.
Washington will be coming back to Prince George to perform at a supper club event presented by ZaZoot Entertainment Sunday night at the Treasure Cove Casino show lounge.
Through word of mouth and a little research on the World Wide Web, an ad agency discovered Washington's talent and hired her to do a commercial for Victoria's downtown businesses.
"I was the singer and the fake guitar player," Washington laughed. "I'm trying to sing, walk, take all my cues and look excited - I'm not going to be able to play the guitar. And I'm like, OK - you guys - and you can tell I'm not playing it!"
The commercial has been running in the Odeon Theatre in Victoria for the last couple of months so it's been getting great exposure.
Her next big show will take place at the Alix Goolden Hall in Victoria called Ladies of Jazz Diva Show Nov. 27.
"OK listen, I'm not a diva," said Washington. "In the positive way I am totally the diva because it's the jewelry and the feathers and the eyelashes and that's totally me, but the other side of the diva I'm not."
For the last 18 months or so, Washington said she's just been performing lots in Victoria, including participating in Victoria's Jazz Fest, at restaurants and corporate functions.
"The great thing is that I've come across some of Victoria's finest musicians that are world-renown artists," said Washington. "That has been such a great learning curve for me. You have to step up your game."
Washington is looking forward to doing the supper club show.
"I'm excited about coming home," said Washington. "I always love seeing everybody. I'm excited about performing at this kind of venue to showcase a few originals I'll be doing as well as typical jazz standards."
Tickets for the supper club, including concert and full buffet is $35 each at Books & Co. and the Treasure Cove casino. Doors open at 5:30, buffet is from 6 to 7 p.m. and concert begins at 7:30 p.m.
