Shapedown North is a weight-management program aimed at overweight youth between six and 16 years. The program, delivered by health professionals, focuses on nutrition, exercise and behavioural techniques in a group setting. This one-year pilot project is a partnership between the province of B.C., Northern Health, UNBC and the Family Y. Youth referrals from physicians are now being accepted. The fall session will be aimed at eight to 13 year olds. The new site is at www.projectfriendship.com also offers information about Project Friendship, its program and how to become involved. ----- On Nov. 7 and 8 Top Dog Agility will hold its final AAC sanctioned agility trial of the season. Trial events will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. with dogs aged 18 months to more than 13 years old performing. Spectators will see some of Canada's top agility teams in action including local members Mike Shortland and his border collie Dazzle, and Kim Collins with Bryn, who have both performed at championships across the nation. Ken Sharp and his papillion Blitz will also be in the running. The team will represent Canada at the world championship in Britain next year. ---- Telus is giving back to Prince George by donating $100 to the Cottonwood Island Park rehabilitation project for every new Telus TV customer in Prince George. The donations will continue for one year from Nov. 3. ----- The Prince George Spruce Kings would like to congratulate Linda Kelly of McBride as the first early bird winner in the 28th Annual Spruce Kings Show Home Lottery. Ticket number 886 was purchased by Linda Kelly at Canadian Tire and was drawn on Nov. 1 at 8 p.m. out of the Show Home Lottery draw barrel at the house in the Aberdeen Glen subdivision. The first early bird prize was a Vancouver Canucks getaway for two from Japatedon Travel & Cruises in Prince George. The prize package featured departure from Prince George, accommodations in Vancouver and tickets to an upcoming Canucks game at General Motors Place. There is a total of ten early bird prizes leading up to the grand prize of a Show Home by Ebb Construction valued at $376,000 on Feb. 14, 2010. ----- Sacred Heart Cathedral is holding an alumni mass tonight at 7 p.m. to help celebrate its 60th anniversary. The hope is that alumni members who were unable to attend the morning mass due to work will come to this evening celebration. ---- The federal government of Canada invites youth aged nine to 16 to participate in the Mathieu Da Costa Challenge. It's a national writing and artwork contest to promote a greater understanding of Canadian history and diversity. Participants are asked to submit original work in the form of essays, poems, paintings, computer-generated images or sculptures which demonstrate how Canadians of different ethnic backgrounds have helped shape our country's history. There are three categories (9 -12, 13 -15 and 16 -18) and winners will receive an all-expenses-paid- trip to Ottawa with a parent or guardian, tickets to the awards ceremony and a certificate of achievement.
