More than 60 recommendations produced by the mayor's task force for a better downtown were approved in principle by city council Monday.
Also given the greenlight were a slate of actions to be implemented immediately, many of which are a call to develop the item to be implemented.
For example, the council's endorsement gives the task force the go-ahead to develop an implementation model that ensures there is a "keeper of the vision" so the plan is not forgotten.
The task force will also be leading the development of a marketing plan for the downtown, and the development of special economic development districts.
A Citizen review has already shown there has been numerous plans to revitalize downtown in the past 40 years, including at least three major efforts in the past two decades alone.
While some elements have been implemented, the revitalization plans have largely been unsuccessful.

Blah, blah blah, blah blah, blah, blah!

Was that enough blah's to cover the speakers???????
I would like to see downtown revitalized---but
"IT AIN'T GONNA' HAPPEN."
Many buildings are past the restoration point.
An investor would hardly be inclined to sink his money in that cesspool.
Clean up is unlikely when the area invites unsavory characters to roam the streets.
Let the ship sink-don't keep sending out a crew to keep it afloat--there is not even anything left to salvage.
Or is this another manner in which to spend the taxpayers money with no return??

LEVEL IT!!!!!!!! START FRESH...............???????????

I personaly think the only way that downtown is going to change is if they level all those old buildings and star fresh.

-level the old out of date buildings
-move all the homless shelters/methadone clinics/soup kitchens/thrift stores/drug & alchol rehab/needle exchange/ away from the down town core. ( i don't understand why they would not house all of these much needed programs under one roof?? Put all the funding that each of these progams together and build one big complex that could house, feed, council, and provide mental and medical help.

once that is take care of ....start a fresh new down town core.............

YA RIGHT.........i can already hear a certain bleeding heart that sits on city counsel crying foul.........too bad that he has city hall and goverment agencies by the short'n curly's. GOD knows you don't step on the rights of certain groups!

It's like kicking a dead horse.......the powers that be don't see easy $$$$$$$$$ in their eyes and they see something that is actually going to take some elbow grease and good ole fashion hard work to achive. Not to mention there is no easy kick backs to line certain peoples pockets. it was easier to push the the new developments in and around the golf and country club and the superstore.

too bad the river wasn't able to flood the whole down town core then we would have access to federal and provincial monies to fix and replace the down town core.

lol........good luck........
