They had their troubles, but the UNBC Northern Timberwolves were sharp enough to post a pre-season win Friday night in Calgary. The UNBC womens basketball team, playing in a Mount Royal College tournament, beat the Medicine Hat College Rattlers 66-55. We played OK, said UNBC head coach Loralyn Murdoch. We still made some rookie mistakes. Handling pressure is not one of our strong points right now but were working through it. Point guard Christine Kennedy led UNBC offensively with 13 points and nine assists, while post player Erin Beckett chipped in with 11 points. Mercedes Van Koughnett, a rookie guard/forward, hit for 10 points. The Timberwolves will face the SAIT Trojans of Calgary today. The UNBC men were also in action Friday night in Calgary. They took on the SAIT men and won 95-89. Statistics were not available. It was a hard-fought game, said UNBC head coach Mike Raimbault. We had a couple stretches where we were up by double digits and they fought back. SAIT is a talented team. The Trojans have loaded up their roster in preparation for hosting this seasons Canadian Colleges Athletic Association national championship tournament. The T-wolves and Trojans will play again today.
