The Tsay Keh Dene First Nation in northern B.C. has voted in favour of an agreement with the province and B.C. Hydro that ends a court case launched over the 1960s flooding impacts of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam and the Williston Reservoir.
The settlement -- which received 80 per cent support from the Tsay Keh Dene members who voted -- provided a one time payment of $20.9 million and annual payments of $2 million. Of the 269 eligible voters 18 years or older, 167 cast a vote. There are an estimated 380 Tsay Keh Dene members.

Real cost
written by P val , July 02, 2009 (07:09:38 PM)
Whats the real cost to us taxpayers ? When did this 2 million annual payment start ? Is it back pay from when the land was flooded ? Or does it start from the signing of this agreement? What was the total cost of legal fees ? I just love how the natives say they are just looking out for the land.. but like north said.. show them the money and damn the land.

long overdue.

Now hopefully this out-of-court settlement doesn't attract the con artists and latent racists (and assorted whiners) who promise the moon but only deliver a shrub, all the while laughing to the bank.

And I also hope the first nation takes a bit of cash and holds a parade down, er, George St or Highway 16 near Costco (the new downtown) just to rub it in the faces of the racists who over-populate this town and message board. Only, I hope they don't buy their new trucks, furnishings and stuff in PG, I hope they go to Edmonton or Vancouver, anywhere but this morally bankrupt place if the preceding messages represent the majority opinion.

These people were physically, emotionally, culturally and spiritually assaulted by the public's political representatives using state power, resulting in their home and native land being utterly destroyed just so it could feed the needs and desires of others living far away, who also collectively profited billions and billions, both past and who will into the future. And now they get a pittance of a settlement and some just have to air their ugly bitterness that the "Indians" got anything. There is no lower place I can think of that people can stoop to in those sentiments. But if there is, it'll found here on boards like this one that originate in Prince George.

The air committee should investigate this town for more than just bad air, because it stinks around here, too. Though I bet not in Tsay Key Dene today or in Kwadacha before them. My congratulations to them all.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I love my hometown and the people in it, not everybody in this town has the "Archie Bunker syndrome". Besides, what more can you expect from the overly vocal minority in this town that cling to this message board, voting each other up, while believing their going to change the world while hiding behind their anonymity and PCs, while ascribing to grade 5 level quotations like, "I'm not a racist but.....?"
