City council members ran up $318,185 in expenses and benefits in 2008, according to a staff report -- about $2,000 more than the year before. Councillors meanwhile, earned as much as $22,085 in salary -- $714 more than in 2007. At $9,535, Coun. Don Bassermann ran up the most expenses -- he was also the front runner in 2007 at $6,407 -- followed by Coun. Shirley Gratton at $4,883, Coun. Murry Krause, $4,562, and Coun. Don Zurowski, $4,397. ------------- A proposal to build a cancer patient lodge at Alward Park will go to a public hearing after city council passed the relevant rezoning bylaw through first and second reading. The plan is to build a 38-bed, 18-room facility to provide accommodation for patients at the new Cancer Centre of the North. In exchange for losing Alward Park, the city will gain the site of the old Duchess Park high school which will be converted into a park complete with playing fields, one of which may be an all-weather field made out of artificial turf.
