The College of New Caledonia will come out the biggest winner as a result of city council's decision Monday night to add 3,500 more hours of service to the city's transit system.
The additional service will start up in September and be aimed primarily at giving CNC U-Pass holders more options for traveling to and from the campus, although high school students and commuters will also benefit.
Cost to the city of the service for the remaining three months of 2009 will be $42,000 while B.C. Transit will contribute $51,000 and $17,000 should come from addtional of transit fare revenue. For 2010, the total cost of the additional hours will be $124,000 for the city -- which amounts to a 0.2-per-cent hike in the property tax levy -- and $153,000 for B.C. Transit with fares adding up to $50,000.
During budget discussions in February, council turned down a proposal to add 7,200 hours at a cost of $257,000 to the city and $313,000 to B.C. Transit for 2010.
