Having read the recent articles in The Citizen, I feel that I must express my disappointment that the Nakazdli band has felt it necessary to file a petition against the development of the Mount Milligan (Shus Nadloh) project. The government-to-government consultation for the project has been conducted by means of the environmental assessment process whereby all levels of government and agencies associated with this project have had the opportunity to gather, discuss and make public all information related to this project. Unfortunately, the Nakazdli band chose to not participate in this working group and therefore they had little or no input into the final approval implemented by the B.C.government. While I recognize that there is some information that needs to be discussed with our elected officials in confidence, I also feel that the Nakazdli band has an obligation to their people and the public in general to conduct business in an open and transparent manner so that we can better understand their position. I agree that the courts recognize aboriginal rights and title, but nowhere can I find that this recognition gives the band exclusive ownership and/or veto power over any activities conducted within this area. All citizens of B.C. are concerned about the negative impacts that may occur as a result of any project development within our province, region and community. Thus, it is in all of our best interests to ensure that the Mount Milligan project is developed in a safe, responsible and informed manner. With the approval of the project by the B.C. government, based on the effort of the environmental assessment group, I am confident that this project can proceed with minimal negative impact on the environment. Our region is facing very difficult economic challenges and the development of this mine will provide much-needed job opportunities which in turn will ensure the longevity of our commercial businesses, social services, recreational facilities and local infrastructures (schools, hospital, arena, etc). I hope the Nakazdli band recognizes that it is greatly jeopardizing this project by failing to consult in an open and transparent manner and by the filing of its petition with the Supreme Court of Canada. At the very least some band coucilors including the Chief, should have stepped aside as these issues were dealt with.
