A Prince George realtor is the highest auction bidder for a place on the annual RCMP bicycle Tour de North to Prince Rupert. Bob Zayonc won the sole civilian team rider space by committing to raise $5,000 for children with cancer. The RE/MAX realtor's goal is to raise $10,500 during the 2009 tour campaign that culminates with the 826 km trek September 11 to 17. He says his inspiration is the fact "we're riding for children." "My goal is to send seven children to summer (cancer) camp; it's only $1,500 per child," said Zayonc. He noted that 21 children from northern B.C. attended Camp Goodtimes last year. "As a grandparent I can hardly imagine my grandchild having to contend with cancer, so I would like those children with cancer to experience the joys of going to camp." A total of 24 RCMP members will make the trek to raise funds for pediatric cancer research and Canadian Cancer Society programs that benefit children with cancer, the second leading cause of death among Canadian children, after injuries.
