SAANICH, B.C. - Police say a B.C. man was text messaging while driving just before he was killed in a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway in January.
Police in the Vancouver Island city of Saanich, B.C., say 26-year-old Michael Wolsynuk died when his truck spun out of control in heavy rain, flipped over a concrete median and into the path of oncoming traffic.
Sgt. John Price says poor tires may have caused hydroplaning and Wolsynuk was not wearing a seatbelt, but the investigation also confirmed that he was text messaging just before he lost control of the truck.
He says police found the time stamp on the messages and spoke to the people Wolsynuk was messaging.
Price says as far as he knows, this is first confirmed case of text messaging being a factor in a motor vehicle crash in B.C.
