A $1-million foundation for an expansion of the Treasure Cove Casino led the way as 49 permits for $3.4 million worth of construction were taken out in November according to a report from city hall. The expansion is to make room for a new bingo hall at the casino as owner John Major is in the process of closing down the Chances Good Time Community Gaming Centre downtown due to a lack of business. Other major permits include a new maintenance shop at A.L. Sims and Sons at 7961 Otway Road, worth $625,000, a fabrication shop at Northwest Equipment Rentals at 9797 Penn Rd., worth $487,000, and a new silo and boiler at the University of Northern British Columbia forestry lab, worth $381,000. Year-to-date, the total stands at $114.2 million, well down from the $152.3 million reached by the same point last year, which ended with a record-setting total of $154 million. Much of the difference is due to a drop in activity on the house-building front as the total now stands at $21 million on 87 permits compared to $46 million on 197 permits by the same point last year. Just one permit for a single family house, worth $149,460, was issued in November, compared to five, worth a total of $1.1 million, for the same month last year. As well, a permit for $35 million worth of work on the Gateway seniors complex at 20th and Victoria was issued last November, boosting that month's total to $39.3 million on 50 permits.
