I almost got run off the road on Tuesday at about 2 p.m. on the Hart Highway by a man in a red minivan. I am blown away by the lack of driving skill people in this town have.
You are not supposed to pull out into the middle of the highway when traffic is coming both ways. I am also shocked that more people don't use their headlights and turn signals, especially in the conditions here. These lights come on every vehicle for a reason.
I don't want to deny anyone a family member because I'm late for work or am too lazy to use signals. Why are the rest of you so determined to kill someone on the road?
I am a new driver and apparently have to have the reflexes of a cat to stay alive on the roads. I don't think half the people driving could pass the driving test if their lives depended on it.
Smarten up, leave early and use your lights.

It's not "in this town", it's everywhere. These people who drive like they're wearing blinders DID pass their driving test. They have licenses, after all. They are just too arrogant to drive safe and within the laws.

After the major snowfall overnight, the morons were out on the roads again. I won't get on the city for the absolute lack of plowing for the morning rush (they should have been working as soon as the snow started falling last night) because that's another topic.

What got under my skin today were the 4x4 pickup trucks who tailgated me in my small car that is only able to go 30-40 kph in these conditions, depending on how bad each road is. Next, there were the numerous drivers NOT using their headlights while the snow was still falling. Even worse, were the few I saw driving WHITE vehicles without their headlights on. That's 10 times worse than a red or blue vehicle without lights on. Those drivers should have their licenses revoked and vehicles impounded.

I personally will not drive in Prince George when it is snowing because of exactly what Julie says. P.G drivers are the worst in the north as far as winter driving goes. All that bad air I suppose.

To all of you pick up drivers who use your big truck to try and intimidate me and my small car.... you can tailgate me all you want, I will not speed up when the weather and roads are so poor. You do not intimidate me, so change lanes and be done with it. I don't beleive there is anywhere that you have to be that is worth causing an accident just because you are in such a hurry to get wherever it is your going. I happen to cherish my life and others. Do yourself a favor, have some patients and drive according to the weather. If you cause an accident, you are going to have to live with it.

There are three kinds of drivers in PG. the sensible ones (you know who you are) the white knuckle drivers, terrified of winter conditions who are accidents waiting to happen, who will panic at every corner or oncomming vehicle, who won't know what to do in the even of even a little skid, and then there are the hotshots, who drive in winter conditions as if it were the same as summer. These are usually driving 4X4's, and are also accidents waiting to happen.

And all year long there are the idiots who don't know what "merge" means. Half of them are mergers and think it means "yield" and won't merge into traffic, and the other are mergees and think it means "yield" and won't let anyone merge into their lane.

Why does everybody say "drivers in PG" and "drivers in this town"? I've driven here, Vancouver, Kamloops, Kelowna, Victoria and Calgary and it's the same everywhere no matter what time of year it is.

People in general do not know how to drive safely. Speed limits might as well be abolished, turn signals don't mean anything and passing on the outside is a new national sport. Everybody is capable of driving safe because they had to in order to earn their license, yet when they don't have the driving supervisor in the passenger seat, they treat driving like a bloody free-for-all

Just to clarify....its not all pick up drivers cus i drive a 4x4 BUT i am also a "N" driver and am tired of people trying to intimidate me too!! I agree with you and the fact that they can go around if they dont like my speed etc. But to ride my bumper while i have a young child in my car just ticks me off! I cherish our lives too and i hope those who "try" to intimidate read this!!!

Lanes
written by Claymor , December 11, 2008 (10:36:48 PM)
Angelrayne, if you're in the right hand lane you're right. If you're in the left hand lane and someone is coming up on you, you're wrong and you should get into the right hand lane. If you're in the proper lane, following too close is an offence; if you're in the wrong lane, you're the hazard. That's the law and the rules of the road. People who don't know how to drive in lanes are the number one annoyance around here and you don't see that as constantly in the other cities PGHockeyfan lists... (tho' maybe the reference to "passing on the outside" means the hockey fan doesn't get it either?)

Lands again
written by Claymor , December 11, 2008 (11:22:12 PM)
I just noticed my point about being in the proper lane also probably applies to oceanpearl53. If you folks are in the right hand lane, nobody should be tailgaiting you. But if you're holding up traffic in the fast lane, you're the hazard and must get into the proper lane. It's not about intimidation in that case, it's about obeying the rules of the road.

The left lane does not mean "fast lane". The speed limit is not lane-exclusive and the left lane does not give anybody a legal right to drive faster than the speed limit. If I'm going the speed limit, I have every right to the left lane. If you're tailgating me while I'm driving the speed limit, it doesn't matter what lane I'm in. You're in the wrong.

@ Claymor
Your point of the left lane is only valid if they are driving a long distance before turning, or on a hill like the #16 hill to College Heights or the hill up to the hart, otherwise your point could be easily viewed as people wanting to make a left hand turn and merely getting in the proper lane to make a change. In busy traffic this has to be done earlier
whether you like it or not.
But you do have a point in that people who drive slow in the left lane always are in abundance in this city. But if I'm in the left lane and I am not going fast because the light up ahead is red then the a-hole two feet off my bumper is just annoying, I prefer to slow down even more just to annoy these people because in the end getting to the red light faster makes no difference to either of us. Certainly many people need to refresh what is proper driving etiquette with lanes, signal lights, 4 way stops and PG is not a thriving metropolis with bumper to bumper traffic jams so riding other people's bumpers in this town deserves the bird and if your in the left lane and already going over the speed limit the person riding your bumper is even worse in the wrong, so again Claymor your rules of the road are not so concrete when put to the test.
That said PG is no different than many other cities of similar size. Just wait for the big snowfall down in Van. everyone up here will be mocking their inability to drive in winter conditions.

if I feel the need to drive a bit slower, I always drive in the right hand lane for slower traffic.I can't count how many times I have had a pick up driver tailgate me to try to get me to go faster, and it's simple i won't.They can pass me anytime. Not all pickup drivers are ignorant, but there sure are a few, that are.I don't let them get to me anymore. They will be the ones that have to answer.
