Led by the $29.5-million Duchess Park Secondary School project, building permits for $44.1 million worth of construction were issued by city hall in October. The amount boosted the year-to-date total to $110.7 million, just shy of the $112-million mark reached by the same point in 2007. However, permits were issued for just five new homes in October, worth a total $1.3 million, down from 15 and $3.6 million in the same month in 2007. Year-to-date, permits for 86 new homes worth $20.9 million have been issued, down from 192 worth $45.1 million by the same point last year. Other significant projects for which permits were issued were: - An $8.5-million addition, foundation only, for a new 20-cell women's unit at the Prince George Regional Correction Centre. - A $1.4-million addition to the Rotary Hospice House at 3089 Clapperton St., which will double the number of beds to 10. - $397,000 worth of improvements to Mark's Work Warehouse in Spruceland Shopping Centre; - Four units of multiple-family housing at 6713 Westmount Dr. in College Heights at $650,000 for the foundation only. The Duchess Park permit was for the foundation only. Meanwhile, development permits were issued for a 20-unit condominium project at 4251 Guest Cres., facade improvements at Spruceland Shopping Centre, a 312-square-metre shop building at Central Interior and Piping Maintenance Ltd.'s location at 7405 Hart Hwy., and a 3,129-metre addition to Wal-Mart at Westgate Shopping Centre.
