The Cariboo Cougars finished the first half of their regular season with a pair of weekend wins in Maple Ridge. The Cougars, who compete in the B.C. Hockey Major Midget League, beat the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs 5-3 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday. In the process, the Cats elevated their record to 11-7-2 and now hold down fourth place in the 11-team MML. Twenty games down, 20 to go for the Cats. The top two teams will receive first-round playoff byes, and the next four will also qualify for the post-season. In the Saturday game, the Cougars and Chiefs were locked in a 3-3 tie heading to the third period. In the third, defenceman Josh Garneau fired the winner, and the Cougars got an insurance marker from affiliated player Tye Moses, who finished the game with two goals. Other Cariboo marksmen were Dylan Willick and Brett Bulmer. Winning goaltender Marcus Beesley gave a solid performance and made a brilliant stop late in the game when the Chiefs were pressing. On Sunday, the first two periods were scoreless. In the first minute of the third, Willick got the Cats on the scoreboard. The Chiefs responded with a goal of their own but then Willick struck with what proved to be the winner. Cariboo forward Tim Traber later hit an empty net to produce the final margin of victory. Goaltender Tim Zwiers, with 36 saves on 37 shots, had a strong game for the Cougars. The Cats will be back on the road this coming weekend, and theyll be in for a challenge. Theyll play Saturday and Sunday games against the league-leading Vancouver Northwest Giants, who own a 17-1-2 record.
