The College Heights Cougars won their first tournament game of the school year. Unfortunately, they lost the next two and finished fifth out of eight teams at a weekend junior boys basketball event in Vernon.
The Cougars, on court at Clarence Fulton secondary school, downed Salmon Arm 66-38 in their opener. Next, they fell 62-41 to the host team. And, in their last game, the Cougars lost 58-45 to another Vernon club, W.L. Seaton.
The Cougars and John McInnis Royals will co-host a 16-team tournament this weekend. Games will start on Thursday afternoon and run through Saturday at College Heights and John McInnis. The championship final is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at College Heights.
n The Big Kahuna City Basketball League -- featuring senior boys and senior girls teams from local high schools -- tips off tonight.
On the boys side, the D.P. Todd Trojans will visit Duchess Park to play the Condors. The game will start at 8 p.m.
The Trojans will use the contest to help get themselves tuned up for a tournament in Kamloops this weekend. At the event, hosted by Westsyde secondary, the Trojans will start against the Kamloops-based Sa-Hali Sabres on Friday afternoon.

Boys stopped by Fulton

With a fifth-place finish and bragging rights on the line, the College Heights Cougars fell just short of victory.
Saturday in Kelowna, the Cougars lost their last match at the double-A boys high school volleyball provincial championship tournament to the Clarence Fulton Maroons of Vernon. Head-to-head during the season, each team had won twice.
The Maroons slipped past the Cougars in the rubber match, 21-25, 26-24, 15-13.
“It was a hard loss for the boys but I am pleased with the perseverance and never-give-up attitude they showed,” said Cougars coach Jay Guillet.
“This team can walk away from this weekend with their heads up.”
Officials at the tournament recognized the character of the College Heights players. During the awards ceremony, the Cougars were chosen as the most sportsmanlike team. On an individual basis, Grade 12 power hitter Adam Starzyk made the tournament’s second all-star team.
