The pace of fundraising for the Salvation Army's Christmas Kettle Campaign picked up slightly over the weekend but still remains behind target according to the latest figures. From Friday to Sunday, slightly more than $17,000 was raised thanks in good measure to local real estate agents who manned kettles at eight locations and the Knights of Columbus, who rang the bell throughout the weekend at the College Heights Save-On Foods. The weekend's effort brought the campaign-to-date total up to $45,540. That's about $6,000 less than the amount the Salvation Army had hoped to have reached by the end of Sunday, but still a big improvement over the roughly $8,000 lag the church and social service provider was facing at the end of Thursday. By the end of the holiday season, the Salvation Army hopes to raise $175,000 -- the same amount as last year although the demand for their services has been on the rise -- and the key is to get more volunteers out to man the kettles, said campaign coordinator Miranda Kynoch. Volunteers are particularly needed between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. each day, she said. To help out, call 564-4000 ext 224 or e-mail
