NDP leader Carole James is in Prince George today to get input on her party's proposal to invest a portion of the province's revenues each year in a rural economic development fund. A public input meeting is being held at 6 p.m. today at the College of New Caledonia, in Room 2-107. James first raised the rural fund idea in September at the Union of B.C. Municipalities annual convention. She said at the time she would be getting input from rural British Columbians on how they would like the fund to be set up. James plans to make the rural fund part of her platform for the May 2009 election. Northern B.C. already has a fund, the Northern Trust, which was set up with seed money from the sale of B.C. Rail to CN. James says the key problem with the trust is that it relies on one-time funding and not an annual revenue stream. The Northern Trust has contributing money to projects like the $33-million Prince George Airport runway expansion, meant to attract the global air cargo business.
