UNBC student Joan Brett is the winner of an Aboriginal Education Incentive Award of $1,000 offered by Canada Post.
The 37-year-old, who's earning her Master's of Education degree, is a single mother of three who has overcome a number of challenges in her life to be able to pursue her dream. She's among 16 Canada Post recipients across Canada who have conquered personal, economic or social adversity in the pursuit of learning.
The $1,000 awards are given to those who have returned to and successfully completed one full year of high school or post-secondary education, including vocational or skills training.
Brett will receive her award at 4 p.m. Dec. 1 at the UNBC First Nations Centre

To help find a cure for cystic fibrosis, Prince George residents are being asked to purchase Christmas poinsettias. The white, red or pink poinsettias range from $15 for a six-inch plant to a 10- inch triple three-colour plant for $30.
Melanie Riedel, whose eight-year-old daughter, Courtney, suffers from the disease said poinsettia sales are way down this year to about 40 from the usual 150.
Orders will be taken through this evening by calling Melanie at 250-964-8019 and can be picked up on Monday between 4 and 8 p.m. at Kinsmen Place.

The Northern Lights Festival committee is seeking volunteers to man the North Pole mail box and hand out candy canes on Connaught Hill through Dec. 20. Times are 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday and 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. Call Karen Cameron at 250-649-3207 if you can help out.

College of New Caledonia students are presenting an evening of poetry chapbooks and readings, wine and snacks on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. in Room 1-306 lecture room. Participants include 25 creative writing students and about 70 guests.
