Colten Dericksons second goal of the season was no needle-threading, puck-on-a-string, toe-dragging dangle through a minefield, but hell take it. The fact it came against his minor hockey buddies from Kelowna and provided the insurance in a 3-1 Kings victory over the Westside Warriors Saturday at the Coliseum made it doubly sweet. Derickson, who played 12 games this season on defence, also scored in Fridays 5-4 overtime loss to Quesnel. He joined the Kings for 11 games last season after getting his release from Bismarck, N.D., of the North American Hockey League. Ive been trying to work hard and keep it simple and its been a while since Ive been getting chances, but Im taking advantage of it, said Derickson, a 19-year-old native of Westbank, just outside Kelowna. Derickson also showed his heavyweight knockout ability in a fight in Sundays 4-1 loss to Trail when he dropped Sean Nugent to the ice with a shot to the face in their first-period scrap. The six-foot, 195-pound Derickson plays right wing on the Kings third line with centre Michael Nardi and Joe Becker and their fast feet and puck movement kept the Warriors contained in their attempts to gain the middle of the ice. The Kings were good in that department all night, and that allowed goalie Kevin Genoe to make most of his 32 saves look routine. All the scoring happened in the first period. Wes McLeod, and RJay Berra also scored for the Kings Saturday. Brett Howe had the only Warrior goal. Dericksons goal made it 2-1. He jumped off the bench to join the rush of six Prince George Spruce Kings skaters on a delayed penalty. Josh Pineiro started the play, waiting with the puck behind the net while Genoe raced to the bench. Zach Davies took Pineiros pass as he took a hit against the boards and fed the puck over the blueline for Joe Morgan. Morgans shot was stopped by Kevin Jebson but Derickson had a gaping net to fire in the rebound. Everyone should have gotten an assist because the whole team touched it, I just jumped on and went hard to the net and it was laying right there, said Derickson.
