Santa's Workshop is one of the most detailed displays in the Northern Lights Festival on top of Connaught Hill. (Citizen photo by David Mah)
For the second year Connaught Hill in Prince George has been transformed into a blaze of Christmas lights to be enjoyed by all ages beginning Friday through Jan. 2. Visitors this year will find the true spirit of Christmas by way of a large nativity scene greeting them before they enter the large gateway to the drive-through extravaganza. New features this year include a white shimmering swan fountain and the official mail box to Santa at the North Pole located at the parking lot. There's plenty of animated action as green dinosaurs race away from a red volcano, and gingerbread men and snowmen do their somersault and tumbling acts. Along the way you'll find Santa's workshop with busy elves hammering away and wheels turning and his flying school with parachuting reindeer. Between the brilliant entrance and exit arches, done in red, white and blue there are colourful displays of lollipops, candy canes, poinsettias, reindeer and trees. Below is a view of the city and above the first stars in the night sky appear. Jill Moore, Downtown Prince George executive director, said,"This year sponsors have stepped up to support this outstanding family event that attracted about 6,000 vehicles, carrying 23,000 passengers a year ago." Initiatives Prince George, City of Prince George and Downtown Prince George, who present the festival, made sure the fun doesn't end on the hill. Downtown Santa will be at the Northern Hardware Saturdays in December from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and there are poinsettia displays at Ramada Hotel, Days Inn along with window displays at Waddling Duck, office of MLA Shirley Bond, and at 1249 Fourth Ave. from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday to Saturday. Seniors will be treated to a special evening during this BC 150 anniversary Dec. 11 at the Ramada Hotel . Visiting hours on Connaught Hill will be Sunday to Wednesday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m. Admission is $10 per vehicle at the site or $8 from participating downtown businesses: Northern Hardware, PJs Rock and Gem, JJ Springer, Waddling Duck, Kelly O'Bryans, Plateau Clothing, Homework, Tourism Prince George and Ramada Hotel. This year's festival sponsors include Prince George Citizen,B.C. Hydro, CN Rail, Integris Credit Union, Jim Pattison Broadcast Group, Prince George Free Press, Ramada Hotel, Knights of Columbus, Signtek Industries and SpeeDee Printers.
