Well known Prince George businessman, Alfred Nelson, died Friday in Jubilee Lodge, where he had resided for seven years. He was 80 years old. Mr. Nelson was born in Granum, Alta, and came to Prince George in 1965, where he was the managing partner of Standard Bus and Prince George Transit Ltd. Under his leadership, the two sister companies of Pacific Western Transportation operated the city transit and held the School District 57 bus contracts for many years. Mr. Nelson was an active community worker and avid sports supporter throughout his life in Prince George. He was a member of Rotary Club, Associated Canadian Travellers, Masonic Lodge and Shrine Club, Sons of Norway Lodge and Royal Canadian Legion, holding many positions including president of both the Rotary and Shrine clubs. He liked to golf and curl, and supported many local sports teams both financially and with transportation to and from out-of-town games. He is survived by his wife, Anne, daughters Diane (Paul) Bertoli, Brenda (Bob) Small, Jan (Murray) Handford and Maureen (Dave) Mallais of Prince George, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Assmans Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations to Jubilee Lodge, c/o Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, are appreciated.
