This wasnt exactly Roman times, but the Coliseum was a scary place to be a goaltender Friday night. They got thrown to the lions, B.C. Hockey League-style, and not one of the three masked bravehearts defending themselves in the arena left the rink unscathed. The Salmon Arm Silverbacks had more weapons at hand and used them to defeat the Prince George Spruce Kings 9-7. A seven-goal combined outburst by both teams in the second period sent any defence-first hockey purists scurrying for the tunnels with the Silverbacks leading 6-5, and the shooting continued in the third period with the visitors outscoring the Kings 3-2. Joe Morgan got the Kings offence cooking 1:49 into the game, going forehand-backhand as he accepted Tyson Halls pass in the slot. Not long after, the Silverbacks snuck a couple past Kings starting goalie Kevin Genoe, scoring on their second and fourth shots to chase Genoe to the bench in favour of Alex Wright. First, Keenan Desmet connected under Genoes glove from a sharp angle, then Bobby Lipsett launched a point shot at the net and Matt Wray was in the right position forming the screen for the tip-in. Sean Ambrosie, the 19-year-old import from Minnesota, tied it up when he jammed in a puck left uncovered after Sam Muchalla tested Tony Ierfino from an obtuse angle. Ambrosie gave the Kings the lead early in the second, showing quick hands threading a backhander low into the net after pouncing on a shot that was blocked in front of Ierfino. It didnt last long. With Matt Lees and Wes McLeod both serving minor penalties that came on the same play, the Silverbacks had just two seconds left on their two-man advantage when Jason Beattie put a low snapshot past Wright. That made it 3-3 with 13 minutes left in the period, and the scoring was far from complete. Greg Noyes, Justin Cseter (with a shot that chased Wright from the game) and Christopher Hoe scored for Salmon Arm, while Adam Baldassarre (with his first of the season) and Alex Allan made it seven goals for the period. Josh Pineiro, acquired Tuesday in a futures deal with Alberni Valley, connected with Muchalla on a 2-on-1 for his first goal as a King, but the Silverbacks fired three more goals to put the game out of reach. David Killip beat Genoe on a penalty shot with a deke through the legs after Zach Davies threw his stick on Killips shorthanded breakaway attempt. Desmet got his second of the game and Zac Rasmussen batted one in. That brought Wright back in to mop up for Genoe the rest of the game. The Kings left the net empty with 1:45 left with Pineiro as the extra skater, and he got his second of the game to complete the scoring. The Silverbacks (19-7-1-1) came into the game on a 7-2-1-0 roll their last 10 games. The Kings (13-11-1-2) were 4-4-0-2 over that same stretch. The Kings host the Langley Chiefs tonight at the Coliseum starting at 7.
