Chilly dip, anyone? UNBC women gearing down for charity Print E-mail
Written by JASON PETERS, Citizen staff

Jen Clyne, Theresa Smith and Kady Dandeneau -- in the name of charity -- have volunteered to take the plunge into icy-cold water.
They just don’t want to do it with too much skin exposed.
Clyne, Smith and Dandeneau are members of the UNBC Northern Timberwolves women’s basketball team. On Sunday, outside the Civic Centre at 1 p.m., they will take part in a Polar Bear plunge, a fundraiser for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation.
The entire T-wolves team is involved in a cash drive, and, for the sake of Clyne, Smith and Dandeneau, the pressure is on to raise $2,500.
Here’s why.
After the Timberwolves played a Friday night game against the Langara College Falcons, a wager was made with members of UNBC’s JDC Commerce Club. Clyne had said she and her teammates were going to raise $2,500, and the JDC folks basically said, ‘no way.’
And so, the bet.
“They were like, ‘We bet that if you don’t raise $2,500, we choose what you wear in the Polar Bear jump. But if you win, you choose what we wear into the Polar Bear jump,’” Clyne said.
“I guarantee it -- if they lose, they’re wearing leopard-print thongs,” Clyne added with a laugh. “(If we lose), I’m thinking it will be something similar. It could be a red thong, but it’s going to be a thong.”
The trio of T-wolves don’t want to have anything to do with frigid water and possible thong-style attire. So, in the spirit of charity, they’re asking the citizens of Prince George for help.
“We are taking this seriously,” Clyne said. “We are calling out to our community. We need all the help we can get -- all the help we can get. We need $2,500 by Sunday. It is crunch time.”
Anyone who is interested in donating to the cause of Clyne and company is asked to send Clyne an e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Clyne has never before thrown her body into such a chilly situation.
“I haven’t, but I’m up for the challenge,” she said. “A little friendly rivalry for a fundraiser, I’m up for it.
“It’s going to be bitter cold. But, you know what? I’m a bit of a water person. Every spring, as soon as the ice is gone (off the lakes), I’m out there skiing, wakeboarding. This is going to be like nothing.”
