They had a free pass to provincials. They didnt need it. The D.P. Todd Trojans won the senior girls volleyball double-A zone tournament in Williams Lake on the weekend. In doing so, they qualified for provincials, Nov. 27-29 in Prince George. The Trojans, as hosts of the B.C. championship, were already guaranteed to be part of the 16-team field. In the zone final, D.P. Todd downed Correlieu of Quesnel 25-20, 25-17, 25-15. Our kids came to play -- they played an excellent final, said D.P. Todd coach Nevio Rossi. We had played (and beaten) Correlieu in the round robin and we knew it was going to be a tough final. Rossi said the mental toughness of the Trojans was the difference between winning and losing the championship match. The play of D.P. Todds Brooklynn Ward didnt hurt either. The Grade 12 outside hitter was picked as the tournaments most valuable player. She played fantastic in the final match but (Grade 12 middle blocker) Breanna Elleray was excellent too, Rossi said. They really played well, both those kids. Our supporting cast played well as well. I was a bit worried about going into the final because our team was so inconsistent through the weekend. They really didnt play their best until that final match. The Trojans beat Peter Skene Ogden of 100 Mile House two sets to none in the semifinal. Overall, they posted a 7-0 match record and lost just one set, that to Williams Lake secondary. By finishing in the silver-medal position, Correlieu also advanced to provincials, which will be held at D.P. Todd and the Northern Sport Centre. A second Prince George team, College Heights, just missed a B.C. berth by losing to Correlieu in the semifinals. The Cougars then won bronze thanks to a straight-sets victory against PSO. It was bitter-sweet, said Cougars coach Jason Olexyn. We would have loved to be at provincials in a couple weeks but the bronze was a fantastic way to finish. We ended up with something.
