A contingent of UNBC students endured long hours outside the classroom to prepare for the second Mock JDC West competition, held this week at the university's downtown campus.
Prior to hitting the stage, each team of three students was allotted three hours to read through a company case study and prepare an analysis -- without the Internet -- using only a pad of paper, pens and PowerPoint.
"They're actually patted down before they go into the resolutions," said UNBC JDC West co-captain Jonathon Gray, who was part of the 2008 entrepreneurship team that placed fifth at the national contest.
Following the presentations, each team received feedback from audience members, who considered presentation structure, quality of argument and language, delivery and other parameters.
"It's a pretty intense competition," Gray said.
A total of 10 academic teams in entrepreneurship, marketing and other areas of study were involved in the week-long mock competition, which precedes a larger contest where they will compete against 14 other universities in late-January in Edmonton.
UNBC will host the competition in 2010.
JDC West or Jeux du Commerce is the largest business competition in Western Canada. Money is raised through sponsorship to give companies an opportunity to access the top business students at UNBC.
There's also a charity component. Last year's competition raised $200,000 for western Canadian charities.
"This year we hope to raise more, around the 250 benchmark. Our team, personally, would like to raise around $30,000," Gray said.
Before the national competition, the gang from UNBC will be taking a plunge in the chilly Northland Dodge Chillin' for Charity brunch during Festival of Trees Nov. 23. To donate, call Matt Rourke at 614-3878.
