Terrane Metals is holding an information session today in Prince George on its proposed $916-million Mount Milligan gold and copper mine in northern B.C. The mine is the closest proposed mine to Prince George, 155 kilometres northwest of the city. The open houses are part of the provincial government's environmental review process, which includes a 45-day public comment period. The comment period began on Oct. 2 and ends at midnight on Nov. 16. The Prince George open house takes place at the Civic Centre from 3 to 8 p.m, including a presentation that begins at 6 p.m. The mine had been permitted in the early '90s under Placer Dome, but that permit elapsed, which is why the project is subject to new provincial and federal approval. The mine is expected to run for 15 years and create 400 jobs. There are several First Nations with claims to traditional territory in the area of the mine. The Nak'azdli First Nation, located to the west of the mine site, has not said it is against the mine, but has said it wants greater involvement in the environmental assessment of the project. The McLeod Lake Indian Band, located to the east of the mine site, has cited support for the project. Open houses are also being held in Mackenzie (at the recreation centre on Wednesday from 3-8 p.m.), and at McLeod Lake (at the McLeod Lake Indian Band's gymnasium from 3-8 p.m.) An open house was already held in Fort St. James. An electronic copy of the application and information regarding the environmental assessment can be found at www.eao.gov.bc.ca Copies of the application are also available for viewing at the public libraries in Fort St. James, Vanderhoof, Prince George and Mackenzie. Comments on the mine project can be submitted to Graeme McLaren, project assessment director, Environmental Assessment Office, PO Box 9426, Stn. Prov. Govt., Victoria, B.C., V8W-9V1. The fax number is 250-387-2208 or comments can be e-mailed to
