COLLEGE HEIGHTS
He's barely out of high school, but that isn't stopping Dane Greenwell from running for mayor of Prince George. The 18-year-old is a 2008 graduate of College Heights secondary school, who has been interested in municipal politics since age 12. His interest was spurred by his grandfather, Alan Greenwell, a former Prince George councillor. "I think I need to do a lot of campaigning, and trying to prove the fact that I am ready and willing to be the mayor," said Greenwell, a Costco employee, who is confident in his platform. "A lot of people are questioning my motives." His primary concern is cleaning up the downtown core. "I've had a lot of people talk to me about tourism and other things which are directly affected by the cleaning up of our downtown." Another issue concerns the Yellowhead Road and Bridge's practice of "striking very often. "I want to see about dealing with them and coming to a reasonable conclusion and having our roads maintained properly year-round," said Greenwell, who is up against former city councillor Dan Rogers and current councillor Don Zurowski. "It seems that since they've been on council and when Colin (Kinsley) was in position of mayor, that everyone talks about doing stuff, but no one's really taken the first step in getting things done, especially with the concern of downtown being around since before my time," Greenwell said. "I want to show them that people in Prince George really do want to see some action taken. And presenting myself in this position will hopefully allow them to see that someone's willing to finally take charge." Local elections are Nov. 15.
