Teen makes mayoral bid Print E-mail

He's barely out of high school, but that isn't stopping Dane Greenwell from running for mayor of Prince George.
The 18-year-old is a 2008 graduate of College Heights secondary school, who has been interested in municipal politics since age 12. His interest was spurred by his grandfather, Alan Greenwell, a former Prince George councillor.
"I think I need to do a lot of campaigning, and trying to prove the fact that I am ready and willing to be the mayor," said Greenwell, a Costco employee, who is confident in his platform. "A lot of people are questioning my motives."
His primary concern is cleaning up the downtown core.
"I've had a lot of people talk to me about tourism and other things which are directly affected by the cleaning up of our downtown."
Another issue concerns the Yellowhead Road and Bridge's practice of "striking very often.
"I want to see about dealing with them and coming to a reasonable conclusion and having our roads maintained properly year-round," said Greenwell, who is up against former city councillor Dan Rogers and current councillor Don Zurowski.
"It seems that since they've been on council and when Colin (Kinsley) was in position of mayor, that everyone talks about doing stuff, but no one's really taken the first step in getting things done, especially with the concern of downtown being around since before my time," Greenwell said. "I want to show them that people in Prince George really do want to see some action taken. And presenting myself in this position will hopefully allow them to see that someone's willing to finally take charge."
Local elections are Nov. 15.

Reads like this person is willing to take charge, time to vote him in before he gets older and starts to think of all the perks, and free traveling available at tax payers expense...

Oh gimme a freakin' break. He is going to post-secondary education, where? So interested in municipal politics that he decided getting an education would disqualify him from running?
Enough with the gimmicks...Young or old. This is more a story about how cynical the electorate has become, rather than a feel-good story of an eager young politician.

He should have run for council first. Get a little experience under his belt. An 18 year old first time mayor is scarier then having Kinsley.

Let him run
written by P val , October 12, 2008 (07:22:23 AM)
He met the requirements to run.. So let him.. it will be good and a learning experience for him and with it he may decide he wants to pursue a political future.. or it may show him how untrustworthy the entire politcal structure is so he never wants to be part of it again. At least he is trying something. Also with Zurowski filling out his application for mayor wrong who would vote for some guy who doesnt know the difference between councillor and mayor. Zurowski should be back on the councillor ballet..not Mayor.

Tourism
written by StraightUP , October 12, 2008 (10:36:09 AM)
About tourism, I think it would be great if PG would grow in that direction. And good luck Dane. If not this time, maybe stick around for round two? Remember the words of Winston Churchhill:Never, never, never, never, never, never, never give up.

Imagine a conversation taking place not too far in the distant future, two old friends meet up on the road of life and ask each other how they have been.

One remarks he has just spent a few months working in Prince George to which his friend turns the corners of his mouth down in disgust,"Boy I cant stand that place-" he interjects,"...last time I was there my brand new 4x4 SUV suffered depreciation like you wouldn't believe the roads were so bad"...

To which his long suffering and knowing friend grins broadly and tells him,"well you'd be surprised, it may have been like that a few years ago, but things have changed a lot since then, the roads are maintained year round and they are probably a lot more smoother since the last time you visited. My wife and I are thinking about settling down there , now"

His friend seemed to take this somewhat in mock incredulity but then quickly conceded.

"And what about the smell..does it smell like a pulp mill everyday"

"Well aromatherapy didnt exactly work so...right now its only every other day"

:)-lol

Hi Dane.

We all started out somewhere. Go for it!

A question.

If you make a mistake, do you admit it and say hey, I'm like everbody else, I put my pants on one leg at a time too. Or, would you resort to the, "Problem Solving Flow Chart"?

I read the facebook comments and answers. Dane, you sound like you have the best interests of P.G. at heart. Your youth comes out however in some of your answers. I would like to see you continue on with your efforts at politics. I hope you get enough votes to make the other candidates sit up and take notice. It's too bad you didn't run for council. Getting a good grasp of how things work would be a great start. The Mayor doesn't have as much power as many think. Things have to be passed in a democratic manner. I wish you all the best and I'll follow your progress with interest.

Sojourn, being that I am in fact a person I would admit to the mistake to the degree in which it was my fault; but I would still enforce a "Flow Chart" to see who else may have been in fault and decide a positive way to solve the problem.

James, thanks for the understanding and support. I will continue in Prince George Municipal politics no matter what the outcome of this election. I realize an understanding of His Worships duties would be a huge asset, just as first aid would be an asset to a tradesperson, but it does not make me completely unqualified. I hope my points are taken seriously, and no matter how I look at it I succeeded in showing that if people try to be heard by the "People In Power" you will be heard; and that truly the people in power are the people in a democracy who are given the ability to decide who is in power and also campaign and run to be in the same position.

I truly do appreciate the constructive criticism and the support,

Dane Greenwell

I have to disagree with all those saying "run for council first", go big or go home. It's good to see this level of ambition and desire come from someone of your age, no matter what your experience is. There is too much negative criticism towards todays youth, maybe you will be able to prove otherwise and show that everyone is capable of anything...no matter what your age is. I don't know you, but I wish you all the best.

"It's good to see this level of ambition and desire come from someone of your age, no matter what your experience is."
On his webpage he points out how easy it was to become a nominee. 2 signatures and above 18 years of age. So where is the ambition? I see someone, who like many of his peers, desires to be "something" but is looking for the easy way.
I actually don't feel anything but contempt for this blatant attempt at publicity. City council isn't meant to be a career destination. Remember it used to be a part-time job. You were supposed to bring your "real" world experience. Get an education...Be one of those really ambitious teenagers and attend post-secondary education and quit wasting every-one's time.

Unlike alexvega...
written by tombstone81 , October 14, 2008 (11:03:29 AM)
Who's idea of bringing his "real world" experience to the table is simply bashing (with no substance whatsoever) anyone and everyone on an anonymous chat forum with a small demographic...thus equally wasting everyone's time and providing zero benefit to the community or society at large.

I say good for you, Dane. At least you're out there putting yourself on the front lines and gaining a perspective on politics which you might be able to parlay into a fresh approach (and eventual victory) down the road.

While I wouldn't vote for Dane yet, anytime anyone is willing to step up to the plate and put their money where their mouth is, they'll get a big pat on the back from me and certainly my ear, for at least trying to do something instead of tapping out insults on their computers. Why anyone would want to trash a young person for getting involved is beyond me...why on earth wouldn't you encourage them and listen to them...you don't have to vote for them or even agree, but at least give them the time of day to hear them out - maybe you'd learn something so you can get off your lazy ass and make a positive difference in our city.

"...put their money where their mouth is" What money did he put up? Not a dime. Not even his own website.
See everyone is free to spew unsubstantiated nonsense as long as it sounds nice. Do some research Buzz. The gist of his little facebook page is how easy it is too sign-up for this.
Why should I give a hoot what an 18 year old with delusions of granduer has to offer?
Feel free to hurl touchy-feely quotes back and forth. I would prefer the candidates brought some experience.

Go for it Dane. I'll be listening and won't base my vote on age discrinination. Some 18 year olds are as mature as a lot of older folks, age has little to do with it. It will be interesting to watch.

In a Medicine Hat byelection in the mid-1980s, 19-year-old Blair Stolz was treated dismissively by most commentators but won a seat on the city council.
He did a competent, if not inspired job, but had the help of a committee of advisers.

How is Dane wasting anyones time? It may not take very much to get on the ballot, but how many have done so in the past? Hey...I have an idea!...You can put your name on the ballot and hit the campaign trail. But, in the end we'll see when the final tally is done. If this young man doesn't win, but gets a good runner-up vote count... than we'll see the level of ambition I speak of. If he happens to win...

Good luck Dane! I wish you and all the municipal candidates well! It takes guts to stick your necks out. Bravo!

As you have found out, the forest is littered with trolls. They are boring! Ignore them. They growl fierce but their sticks are small. Funny tiny trolls. Tee Tee, I squash them like a bug.
