Some of the faces are familiar -- Rick Hansen and Chief Dan George, among others -- but matching names to all of the B.C. celebrities pictured in The Party will challenge even the most knowledgeable of historians.
The display is a highlight of the Free Spirit Conservation Tour that opened Wednesday at The Exploration Place.
A cardboard cutout of Bob Harkins greets visitors at the exhibit, which also contains life-size action shots of basketball star Steve Nash and the legendary Cougar Annie, a Clayoquot Sound homesteader who was born in the 19th century and lived nearly 100 years. There is also a cutout of UNBC president Dr. Charles Jago.
The traveling exhibit -- based on the Free Spirit: Stories of You, Me and B.C. exhibition at the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria -- celebrates the province's 150 year-history. The idea of the traveling version is to engage the entire province.
"We're trying to collect stories -- people's history stories -- that's part of the reason we're here, just to add to our Web site and add to our collection," said Kay Garland, technician of the traveling exhibit. "B.C. has lots of interesting stories and really interesting people."
The tour is a partnership between the museum, the government and B.C. Hydro.
"When B.C. Hydro got involved, they saw it as a sustainability issue," said Tracy Calogheros, executive director at The Exploration Place. "We've been here 150 years. Look how far we've come. What are we going to be celebrating 150 years from now?"
The tour includes children's activities, and song and dance routines that contain energy conservation messages. Patrons are encouraged to join B.C. Hydro's Power Smart team, which can be done at the exhibit or at www.bchydro.com.
The Free Spirit Conservation Tour runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. until Saturday. Admission is free.
Royal B.C. Museum entomology curator Dr. Rob Cannings will speak at 7 p.m. tonight at the downtown library.
The tour has also visited Fort St. John. Next stops are Kamloops, Revelstoke, Courtenay, Fort Langley and Vancouver. For more information, visit www.freespiritbc.ca/conservationtour.
