BRITISH COLUMBIANS
Students are encouraged to come to Victoria and see the inner workings of the Legislature firsthand. Minister of Education Shirley Bond wants students from her home area of Prince George, McBride, Valemount and Mackenzie to apply to take part in the annual B.C. Youth Parliament program. Applications are being accepted now for a limited time. "B.C. Youth Parliament provides an amazing opportunity for young British Columbians to develop their leadership skills in a very unique setting," said Bond. "For 80 years, the BCYP has provided students with the tools they need to make a difference in their communities." Each year, 95 youth are elected to BCYP as representatives of their communities. The applicant must be nominated by an organization committed to youth such as a school, community group, club or church. "I have attended BCYP as an MLA and I want to make sure that the B.C. Youth Parliament has representatives from all across B.C. Please take the time to nominate a northern student for this program," Bond said. BCYP's Parliamentary Session runs from December 27 to 31, 2008 at the BC Provincial Legislature in Victoria. The activities include debating to plan education and service projects, establishing BCYP financial commitments and amending BCYP governing legislation. After session, members put their plans into action back in their home community. All application forms must be received by Oct. 22. Selected applicants will be notified in early November.
