Leblond returning to midgets Print E-mail

Chapen Leblond is coming back to the Cariboo Cougars.
Leblond, a 17-year-old centreman from Terrace, has been assigned to the local major midget hockey team by the Cowichan Valley Capitals of the B.C. Hockey League. He will be in the lineup for the Cats this coming weekend when they play in Delta against the Greater Vancouver Canadians.
Leblond saw limited action in seven games with the Capitals. He was held pointless and picked up a minor penalty. He was a member of the Cougars last Major Midget League season and posted 21 points (10 goals, 11 assists) in 39 games.
“He can be another premier player in the league,” said Cougars head coach Trevor Sprague. “We’re expecting him to put up a few numbers and he’s got some toughness there as well. It’s good for our offence.
“He’s definitely a guy that we’re going to move to the power play right away and see if he can contribute there. (With Cowichan) he was sitting games and he wasn’t getting a regular shift five-on-five.”
Leblond will likely get another chance with the Capitals next season.
“Talking to Scott Robinson, the head coach and general manager of Cowichan, he’s pretty excited on the fact he’s got a player he knows he can develop here and that (Leblond) will have time to go and be a player for their hockey club for sure next year,” Sprague said.
The Cougars did not have to make any roster moves to create room for Leblond. Last week, two Cariboo forwards -- 16-year-olds Mark Arnold and Calvin Johnson -- left the team and went back home to Smithers. One of those spots was filled by Prince George’s Mitch Elliot.
Sprague was also expecting to add local goalie Mike Garteig to the Cariboo lineup. Garteig had been stopping shots for the BCHL’s Quesnel Millionaires but has been released. Instead of joining the Cougars, he opted to accept an offer from Fernie of the Kootenay International junior B league. That means Cariboo goalie Tim Zwiers, who had been on a temporary card with the Cougars, has been upgraded to permanent status.
