The next time the UNBC Northern Timberwolves score a goal, count on the celebration being a wild one.
Why?
Well, after being shut out 2-0 by the Vancouver Island University Mariners on Saturday and 1-0 by the Capilano University Blues on Sunday, the UNBC women’s soccer team has now gone four games without beating an opposing goalkeeper.
“We have a problem getting it in the back of the net,” UNBC midfielder Holly Miller said after the Sunday game, played at Michelle Lamarche Fields. “We have good buildup and we played really well (Sunday) but we just can’t finish and that’s been our problem since the beginning of the season.”
Miller, a second-year player, admitted that frustration is starting to build.
“Oh yeah,” she said. “But we just have to keep going at it and hopefully soon it will happen. It seems like we’ve been trying to do everything we can do.”
Capilano’s Paige Ritchie connected for the lone -- and winning -- goal in the first half. Ritchie took a crossing pass from the right side of the field and, from close range, sent the ball past UNBC keeper Roxanne Solmonson.
The Timberwolves set the pace for much of the second. Julie Martin missed wide on one scoring chance, while another UNBC opportunity resulted in the ball drifting over top of the crossbar. Earlier, Capilano did threaten to extend its lead but Kaitland Couperus cranked a shot off the crossbar.
Including Saturday’s loss, the Timberwolves own a 1-7-2 record, which has them in last place in the eight-team B.C. Colleges Athletic Association. The Mariners are fifth at 4-5-1 and the Blues sit third at 6-3-1.
UNBC coach Mato Mikic is looking for something -- anything -- to go the Timberwolves’ way as they continue their season with a Saturday road game against Vancouver’s Langara College.
“To be good, you have to play hard, you have to have the referee on your side a bit and you have to be lucky,” he said. “And if you’re missing one of those, it’s hard to win the game. Sometimes, playing hard is not good enough.”
The UNBC men’s team will also face Langara College on Saturday. Both T-wolves clubs will then take on New Westminster’s Douglas College on Sunday.
