MAYOR COLIN KINSLEYNORTH AMERICAN
A delegation of local politicians, social workers, businesspeople and RCMP will be traveling to Portland, Oregon this week to get a first hand look at its program for getting homeless people off the street and into long-term housing. This will offer us a chance to see first-hand an initiative that shows real promise in helping find solutions to homelessness, Mayor Colin Kinsley said. After finding permanent housing for 1,500 chronically homeless in two years, the city's Housing First strategy has been hailed as a success and the delegates want to see how it could be implemented in Prince George. A count conducted in August determined there are at least 260 homeless people in Prince George and studies show it's actually less expensive to house people than to rotate them through emergency shelters, hospital emergency rooms and police cells. The Housing First strategy, which is used in several North American cities, centres on providing homeless people with housing quickly and then providing services as needed.
