Shari Green running for city council Print E-mail
Written by Citizen staff
Monday, 06 October 2008
Downtown Prince George president Shari Green is running for city council.
Green, who co-owns a clothing store on Fourth Avenue, will be emphasizing downtown revitalization during her campaign. Asked why it's important to all the city, Green said increasing property values downtown will lower the tax burden on the rest of Prince George, "and it's a matter of city pride."
Ending homelessness and establishing a development corporation to market downtown properties would be among the steps she would take on the matter if elected, adding it would be good to see city-owned property downtown developed.
A community court for people who commit crimes because of social issues is also a priority for Green.
"If we can have those people getting those services they need immediately as opposed to waiting to go through the court system, it's going to be of benefit to them and it's going to free up the police and the courts to focus on the real predators in our community, which are organized crime and the gang activity," she said.

Boy, city hall must be crying over this one. She calls constantly over every little thing. Made a big stink over a bus stop on 4th because "her" type of people don't ride the bus. Tells homeless or people that don't look like "her" type of customer to leave the store the second they step inside. With her elitist attitude it should be interesting if she gets elected. If her attitude was a little more embracing of the whole human race instead of just the people that have the money to spend in her store, she'd be a good advocate for downtown. As it stands and if she has any say about it you'll have to earn a certain income to even be considered worth her time. Shari, you've said a lot of things to a lot of people about the downtown situation and it's not been very kind. What makes you think you can best serve the citizens of P.G. when a lot of them are not "your" kind of people.

Well said James. How can someone who has their nose up in the air represent the common folk of PG? These "elitist" type people are only looking out for what is best for them. Good luck Shari, LOL.

It's easy to sit and criticize people who are trying to make things better for others and not just rich people. Maybe James and Drifter have some good solid ideas that will work for everyone or do all you know how to do is complain? I say cheers to someone who looks like they might get the job done - and yes, a few feathers may get ruffled..............hooray and more power to her.

I think the best candidates are those that have the best interests of all people. Politics too often favour the affluent and ignore the little people. If the attitude is such that only certain people are worth the time of day then I think this is not a candidate for us.

The downtown needs a facelift. The gang shooting was a one time deal and no different than the shooting at a Vancouver mall. The homeless, drug users, street people will always be downtown. They're not the problem. The dirty streets, dumpy buildings etc. are a problem. Paint the buildings and clean the sidewalks. Upping the taxes for downtown businesses as Shari promises to do will up the rents and thus close business downtown.

There's no doubt that Shari has the downtown as her mandate. Sometimes Shari, it means rolling up your sleeves and picking up a broom and cleaning things yourself and not always calling the city every time something falls on your sidewalk or in your part of the alley. Taxes are high enough and the business of the city is not running around doing picky little things that the local business people can take care of themselves.

Where is the pudding?

Greta has a point. Attacking someone's character and integrity without substantiation is beneath us all. The fact it is done anonymously is even worse.

I think "Greta" and "gsjonuk" are both missing the point. I have had personal dealings with Shari in the past and in my opinion she only cares about the "upper crust" type of people. Did James not state that having a bus stop in front of her business was not appropriate as "her" type of people do not ride the bus? Does this not tell you something about one's character? I think Katie has it right in which the best candidates are those that have the best interests of all people. In my opinion, I feel Shari is not that type of candidate.

Jealousy can be vicious

If you don't like Shari don't vote for her. If you think you are or know a beter candidate put your $100 in and run you still have 2 days. To quote Collin Kinsly,"if your feelings are so strong run for city council".(he wasn't all just good looks you know ;-)

Shari just sees that this community can be so much more than we are right now. Personally I see this to and I am not going to stand by as others pee on somone who cares this way about thier community. I wish her best of luck and all the others who come forward to throw thier name in the hat this fall.

James F., Katie McLeod and Drifter 6332, you are sure spending alot of energy on a person you apparently don't have the time of day for. My goodness, the pettiness is more than a person can bare......

I have lived here all my life and the city core is the worst I have seen it. I think everyone running for City Council has to be congratulated for their desire and interest to make this city a better place. Shari owns a business downtown and it is people like her that will make a difference. If she didn't care ... I highly doubt she would be running.

Like 53, I also have lived here all my life and when I was a child the mantra was don't go down by 3rd and George. Isn't it funny how 50 plus years later it's still the same??? You would have thought that someone would have had at least one concrete sustainable idea on how to fix the downtown core, so I say "good for you" to anyone who wants to clean it up.

"Upping the taxes for downtown businesses as Shari promises to do will up the rents and thus close business downtown."

Wow Katie, you sure seem passionate about Shari's candidacy. Maybe you should re-read the article. It says "increasing property VALUES", not taxes.

James F. has comments that could be libelous. People should think about what they type here.
