There was a lot of attention being paid to the melting of the Arctic ice cap over the past summer. Unprecedented, said the experts. However, at one point in history the Arctic supported mammoths such as the one in the provincial museum in Victoria. We are told there were also beavers that weighed as much as 500 poundss, as indicated by skeletal evidence. This brings up the question: How thick was the polar ice cap when all of the plant growth necessary to support these animals was occurring? -- C. Hubbell Hixon
