CEDARS CHRISTIAN SCHOOL
The Cedars Christian School walkathon students cleaned up on Friday. They brought in bags of money and bags of garbage all in aid of the new facility their growing student population needs.
"The preliminary total I announced to the school body was $17,200 which is an amazing amount of money for these kids to raise," said CCS development director Annie Weinard. "More sponsorship money will be coming in next week, but we are so pleased with this; it is actually quite close to the $20,000 goal."
The school's 450 students plus staff and parents did the walk on Friday, heading up North Nechako Road to the ball diamonds then back to the school for a total of 5 kms. As they went along they gathered litter. They stuffed 20 bags of garbage in total, picked up by a truck from the city works department.
"Truckers honked their horns and a couple of elementary girls said they counted 135 waves from people who drove by," said Weinard.
Prizes will be announced this week at school for the students who were most involved in the fundraising aspect. Annie Bourque (Grade 7) won the high school prize for collecting 18 sponsors and Lara Zral (Grade 5) won the elementary prize for collecting 74 sponsors. Once all the funds are calculated per classroom, a pizza party will be the prize for the classes who came in with the most sponsors.
All money raised will go to Phase 1 of the school's expansion program. The first phase is an extra 13,000 square feet, which includes a full secondary-sized gymnasium, better administration area, better foyer, and specialty classrooms. The expected cost is about $4.5 million, of which there has already been about $390,000 already raised, Weinard said, plus the walk-a-thon proceeds.
The second phase is another 15,000 square foot addition including more classrooms and an improved library.
The school's population has seen a large increase in the past few years, necessitating the expansion.
