CARIBOO-PRINCE GEORGEUNITED STATES
Welcome to the North! The Greens have appointed Amber van Drielen as their candidate in Cariboo-Prince George. The appropriately named Amber (as in, be cautious) has already seen the red flags go up concerning her candidacy. She's a parachute candidate who has no interest in getting to know any of her prospective constituents. She's already said she won't be taking part in any debates and won't talk to the media. Maybe she just picked the wrong party. Given the fact her candidacy is a joke, perhaps the Rhinoceros Party would have been a better choice. In fact, one of the tactics of the Rhinos was for candidates to change their names to be funnier. In this case, Amber would be a perfect fit. Given she won't talk to the press, maybe she could use a nom-de-plume for her ballot entry. If I was her adviser I'd suggest using Sarah Palin. She won't talk to the press either and at least with Sarah you get North America's hottest political candidate and some name recognition as well. -------- Sorry I missed the Beach Granddads' appearance at the old folks' home. Must have been a real blast from the past. Good turnout, I hear. Several people suggested the crowd must have been close to 3,000. I didn't know there was room in the CN Centre for 3,000 people - and their walkers. The Beach Granddads are so old I'm surprised they remembered the words to the songs -- I can't. It's usual for most bands to do a sound check prior to each concert. You know, they want to make sure the acoustics are right and that their musical efforts will be heard to maximum effect. So I was just wondering if there's any truth to the rumour the sound check for the Beach Boys was for hearing aids? -------- Good news, recent events have left the residents of Prince George as the proud owners of the Columbus Hotel-- or at least what's left of an empty lot. If there's any insurance money left over from the fire, I think we should rebuild the 'Bus as a biker hangout. Those guys and gals like to party so there'd be no shortage of income from beer and liquor sales. And the police would probably like to have a one-stop shopping area when they are looking for the usual suspects. The only problem I can see is the lack of camaraderie among the local gangs. It's an easy fix, though. The Hells Angels get the top floor, the Renegades are on ground level and the Independent Soldiers get relegated to the basement. It's perfect -- juke joint imitates life. And when there are turf wars for gang supremacy, they can just fight their way up, or down, the stairs. -------- Merrill Lynch Canada says we're being a little too smug when we laugh at the housing bubble and credit crisis in the United States. Apparently, Merrill thinks it can happen here. They point to the fact homeowners in Canada are also living above their means and are spending way too much of their family income on housing. And Merrill is right. At least they're partly right. In places like Vancouver, where according to a Citizen story, it takes an average 73.8 per cent of a household's income to cover the cost of home ownership. By anybody's standard's that's too much. And Vancouver is probably not alone. Calgary, Kelowna, and even a place like Fort McMurray, Alta., is probably far too expensive for the average Joe or Jane to afford a home. But come on, that's not Canada. Those places are either oil-fuelled economies, or a California North-like paradise like Kelowna. C'mon, nobody from those places lives in the real world. And with our economy starting down the wrong side of the hill, it'll be too expensive for the rest of us to even dream about moving there. So a few thousand people from paradise go under; do most of us care? It depends, but certainly not when it's 40 below and we're digging out from under six feet of snow.
