Times are tough in and around the Crooked River-Parsnip area of the Fraser-Fort George Regional District, but Area G director Terry Burgess sees a number of positive developments in communities north of Prince George. These include the world-class ski resort at Powder King, Terrane Metal's proposed Mount Milligan gold and copper mine near Mackenzie, Enbridge's proposed pipeline, and an impending new sewage system in Summit Lake. Burgess -- who will attempt to regain his director's seat in the Nov. 15 election -- said the downturn in the forest industry "has hit the area really hard," noting a mill closure in Bear Lake. The latter has been burdened by a significant number of beetle kill trees that have created a serious fire hazard the last couple of years. "I finally got things rolling along," Burgess said. "There's a major logging contract happening by spring. We (district) have a forester ourselves that, whatever is left, is going to log that all off." Burgess notes insurance costs of three community halls are "major issues" in his area. The cheapest hall to insure is in Bear Lake -- where there is fire protection -- at $2,000 a year. The hall at Summit Lake is $4,000 a year. "I've held the taxes in my area," Burgess said. "I'm hoping things will turn around, although I'm a little bit leery of watching what's happening in the United States right now. I'm hoping that mining will get going."
