First period, all Kings. Second period, all Kings. Third period... yes, all Kings.
The Prince George Spruce Kings won the battle of the same-name BCHL teams on Thursday at the Coliseum, downing the visiting Powell River Kings 6-3.
The Spruce version of kingly hockey scored three times in the first period -- power-play goals by Sean Ambrosie and Wes McLeod sandwiched around a Joe Morgan marker -- and rode the 10-save goaltending of Kevin Genoe to an early lead.
After Ben Schmidt got Powell River on the board in the second period, the Spruce Kings made it three-for-three on the man advantage with an RJay Berra goal. Erik Vos of Powell River and Zach Davies of the Spruce Kings traded goals to make the score 5-2 home-side after 40 minutes.
At one point in the second period, the opportunistic Spruce Kings were being outshot 21-9 but winning 4-1 in front of an estimated 500 attendees. Former Cougars and Kamloops Blazers winger Matt Wray was in the lineup for Powell River after being released by Kamloops earlier this week.
Vos added his second for Powell River with an unassisted power-play goal, but Ambrosie finished the scoring with a short-handed empty-net goal. Genoe, who assisted on Ambrosie’s second goal, finished with 45 saves and was named first star.
The Spruce Kings are home to the cellar-dwelling Merritt Centennials tonight, a 7 p.m. start.
--- Former Spruce Kings forward Vinny Muchalla, 20, is on his way to join the Winkler Flyers of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League. The Prince George product, who left the Kings last year and asked for a trade, has played for the Olds Grizzlys and Penticton Vees since his time in Prince George. The Vees sent Muchalla’s rights to Winkler for future considerations.
