Brian Pepper, superintendent of School District 57, makes a base salary and a total compensation package well within provincial norms , according to a document released this week that looks at public salaries. Pepper's income reasonably parallels his peers from around the region and from school districts of similar complexion, although there are vast fluctuations from district to district, show the figures released this week by the provincial government. All districts were included in the disclosure document, and it is also available online at www.aved.gov.bc.ca/psec/disclosure.htm. The records show that Pepper is paid $126,936 as a base salary plus a pension contribution of $16,831 and other compensations amounting to $13,397 for an aggregated total of $157,165. He has been in the position since February 2006.
Nearby school districts (district, superintendent, base salary, aggregated salary)... - Nechako Lakes - Ray LeMoigne: $116,766 / $153,221 - Peace River South - William Deith and Kathy Sawchuck (overlapping, combined): $123,657 / $204,099 - Quesnel - Sue-Ellen Miller: $119,472 / $147,066 - Bulkley Valley - Bev Young and Rod Allen (no overlap, combined): $126,807 / $164,835. - Cariboo Chilcotin - Wayne Leckie: $117,398 / $162,525. - Peace River North - Larry Espe: $136,579 / $162,240.
School districts of similar complexion... - Okanagan Similkameen - Juleen McElgunn: $120,024 / $150,049 - Vernon - Bob Peacock: $129,483 / 158,491 - Central Okanagan - Mike Roberts: $140,391 / $176,071 - Okanagan Skaha - Gary Doi: $118,844 / $154,201 - Nanaimo Ladysmith - Michael Munro: $136,563 / 181,690 - Kamloops Thompson - Terry Sullivan: $137,016 / 188,385
Least paid and most paid... Stikine School District's Bryan Ennis makes the lowest base salary in the province at $106, 280, but with other incentives his total reaches $144,953. At the other end of the scale is Surrey School District's Mike McKay, who makes the top base of $203,863 and the top aggregated total of $251,522. The only one close to those amounts is Christopher Kelly in the Vancouver School District who makes $172,476 and $218,509 respectively. One other Prince George connection is School District 93 - Conseil Scolaire Francophone. This unique district is the province-wide French language education organization. They operate an all-French elementary school in Prince George (the former Seymour elementary school) and an all-French secondary program based within Duchess Park secondary school. The provincial superintendent for this district-without-borders is Mario Cyr, who makes a base of $142,907 and a grand total of $192,484. The same records also show the salaries for other provincial chief executive officers in other sectors. For example, regard below the results for university top executives and the CEOs of health authorities: Among university presidents last year, former UNBC chief Don Cozzetto made a base of $253,352 and a grand total of $367,139 (not counting his severance package), which was well below the remuneration for the top executives at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia and the University of Victoria, but still more than the CEOs of Royal Roads University and Thompson Rivers University. Among health authorities, our region was served by Malcolm Maxwell, then Catherine Ulrich, with a slight overlap in their tenures. Together they made a combined base/total of $284,695 / $359,663 which is lowest among the Fraser, Interior, Vancouver and Vancouver Island health authorities.
