I was shocked to hear that tolls would no longer be collected on the Coquihalla and appalled at the way the workers found out that they no longer had jobs. According to a former worker interviewed, they heard the news on the radio when the rest of the province did. How insensitive is that? She stated that sanitation facilities were recently upgraded which would also be at taxpayers' expense. By whom will they now be maintained? I think the possibility of ending tolls should have been discussed in a fall sitting of the legislature. All the people of B.C. paid for this highway and it was an excellent source of income which benefitted all of us in the province. We need more public transport in B.C. Why not use the "excess" toll money to help with that? I believe that those who use should pay. Although I do not live in the Okanagan or Kamloops area I have used this highway many times and gladly paid for the convenience of a shorter route. We all saved time and gas money by taking this route, but now the local people get a double saving. Is it fair that we who do not live there now do not get the benefit of the income from these tolls? Our government still needs money. How will this loss of income be made up? New taxes? Other programs cut? I understand that Vancouverites will soon be paying a toll for a new bridge. People who live on the Gulf Islands must pay for using the ferries (which no longer belong to us either). Why do those who use the Coquihalla not pay? Could it be that many voting ex-Vancouverites now live in the Okanagan? I consider this a bribe and Mr. Campbell needs to know that many of us see this as early campaigning, not a true benefit to the province. -- Maxine Beattie Prince George

I feel for the employees at the toll booths, just shows how much respect Campbell and cronies have for the people who actually work for a living in this province.
