In view of the latest melamine scandals, why are we importing anything from China? Now it's in milk products, candy and who knows what else.
They didn't learn after Chinese imports killed thousands of pets and now food products are in massive recalls. I think it's time all imports from China were stopped.

Good idea. Good things aren't cheap-and cheap things aren't good.
The retailers only deal with China because of the deals. They do not investigate quality.
The purchasing public should not be placed at risk so a merchant can make that extra buck.
Check before you buy-and stay clear of items imported from China.

The saddest part of this whole thing is, that, according to cbc.ca, as of last week, 53,000 Chinese babies have come down with kidney stones and some have total kidney failure, after being fed infant formula contaminated with melamine. Many have died, although I don't remember the number there. Reading the article made me physically ill, but people need to know these things.

A tiny baby with kidney stones...just the thought of its suffering breaks my heart.

I wonder about the safety of foods using powdered milk, etc. that may not say produced in China but does it contain powdered milk imported from China -things like coffee whitener, chocolate drink mixes, canned soups, etc. and even our infant formulas. They have poisoned thousands of their own children, candy bars, etc. This whole thing is horrific beyond words. Time to stop Chinese imports completely.

And just think of the jobs, benefit to Canadian farmers, businesses - hence the economy if the majority of products on our shelves were made in Canada. Safety aside, that makes more sense to me. I doubt Canadian dairies would add water and melamine to milk to up the protein values falsely, poiusoning infants in the process. Some countries have banned Chinese imports, as I think we should too.

I read on CNN tonight they're saying small amounts of melamine won't hurt adults, such as might be found in coffee drinks, etc. I'm beginning to wonder how widespread this thing is. I'm glad I'm not a coffee drinker and will only be using fresh milk in my house. I hope any companies that use imported milk products from China are forthcoming. The FDA said it's been found in yogurt drinks made in China but that infant formula is safe.

I sure hope you're right about the infant formula, travhops. My new grandson, although not being bottle-fed now, may get the odd bottle later on as his mommy goes to run errands, etc.

Found in yogurt drinks, huh? Good thing no one in my family likes yogurt...truth is, we can't stand the stuff...and it's fresh-brewed coffee for this old soldier, no less--with real milk.

If Chinese imports were banned then Walmart would be out of business. Zellers as well. We've become a society that wants disposable items. How many "well made" clothes do you see people wearing? No one wants to spend the money so we've become a Walmart, Macdonalds society. There are very few of us left that want quality. And actually quality is cheaper in the long run because you don't have to keep replacing it.

Buy local from local businesses, that's where you'll find quality and service. And for that, you'll have to go downtown.

WalMart and Zellers wouldn't be out of business, they'd just need another source and as big as they are, they would find it. What more evidence does the west need that Chinese are all about money and that honesty and consumer safety are not a priority. Actually you don't have to go downtown, just read labels. Not everything in those stores is made in China. In the last few years we've had massive recalls of toys made in China because of lead levels, pet poisonings over the tainted wheat mixed with melamine, now it's in milk products. How does the rest of the world get the point across? By not buying from China they will be forced to clean up their act.

First comes the economic war. Have you seen The Zeitgeist Movie? You can watch it on the computer. Gives you a different perspective on rligion, war and politics. Worth watching!!

Stop and think about what has happened. After the pet food disaster, they are aware melamine kills yet it was knowingly added to milk.
