City looking at boundary road Print E-mail

Initial steps were taken Monday to draw enough federal and provincial money to build Boundary Road, a proposed $48 million four-lane, 6.6-kilometre stretch connecting Highway 97 south and Highway 16 east at the Prince George Airport.
Council gave staff permission to start preliminary design of the project, and $80,000 was included in the 2009 capital program to complete the work -- another $80,000 will come from the developers of the nearby airport logistics park.
The design will be a key part of an application to the Building Canada Fund from which the city hopes to draw $16 million from each of the federal and provincial for a total of $32 million.
A further $8 million would come from developers of the logistics park and $8 million from the city, council was told, likely in the form of a debenture.
The item was also placed on the "future list" of the city's five-year capital plan but if all works out, work could begin as soon as next spring, council was told.
Over the longer term, the city is also hoping to extend the connector over the Fraser River at the Danson light industrial area and then connect to Highway 16 West at roughly Haldi Lake Road to form a ring road at a cost of $110 million to $145 million according to preliminary estimates.
Coun. Don Zurowski maintained that stretch, if built, should be maintained by the provincial government not the city.
"We do not need to have operating responsibility for the road and the ongoing liability that comes with that," he said. "It's very important that it happen but we need to get it on the provincial transportation agenda rather than the municipal transportation agenda."
