Prince George's Communities in Bloom committee wants to build on its achievements to date and expand on the program in 2009. Speaking to city council on Monday night, committee chair Anne Martin listed several goals and objectives for the coming year beginning with entering the international competition once again "so we don't lose our momentum." Also on the agenda is coordinating a new national gardening contest, "which will allow local gardeners to receive national recognition," she said. The committee wants to form more partnerships with the commercial sector and is also in touch with the Drug Awareness and Recovery Team (DART) "to see how we can develop maintenance programs for business owners who perhaps don't have the knowledge or time to keep their landscaped areas tidy and weed free." Other goals include expanding the Walk in the Garden event, developing an international friendship garden and maintaining the community enhancement matching grant program. As a result, the committee will be seeking council's continued financial support for 2009 as well as a continuance of the $10,000 grant for the community enhancement program. The requests were referred to next year's budget discussions. Prince George came away from the 2008 international competition with a score of five blooms out of five and special notice for the quality turf in the city's parks and recreation facilities.
