I read with disgust the story about the cost we, as taxpayers, have paid for the "Chambers Fiasco." But what was even more disconcerting to me is the haphazard response of our city councillors. Do they not realize how their comments, or lack thereof, reflect their attitudes? These individuals are our elected officials, put into office by the taxpayers of Prince George and they are ultimately responsible for the safekeeping of our tax dollars. For the councillors who said they feel comfortable with senior administration, do they not read the letters and editorials? I believe that one letter asked a very poignant question: When are the directors and the city accountable for the money spent on cover-ups? The City of Prince George has so-called policies in place and yet they seem to have been completely ignored here. Why? Is it because the human resources department spearheads and condones this type of activity? I believe the head of the union representing the city employees stated that they have tried on numerous occasions to have bullying policies enforced, but have had no success. Interesting. Perhaps that's another question that city councillors need to answer to. Someone has to be held accountable. In the end, the taxpayers must be satisfied that our local government is, at best, not inept and, at worst, not corrupt. So far, the perception is not clear. The final insult to our intelligence is when our mayor tries desperately to excuse the chief of police's actions, stating that the detachment is a stressful place to work. Give us a break, Mayor Kinsley. If the chief of police can't stand the stress, then he should be removed to another position for which he is better qualified. Finally, the bottom line is that this situation is a major embarrassment, not only to the RCMP, whose reputation is already at an all-time low, but also to our city as a whole. It certainly makes us look like a redneck town that considers harassment, torment and persecution as the norm. -- Wally Neufeld Prince George
