Re: First day of classes goes Wednesday (story, Sept. 2).
I spoke Tuesday to a staff member at a local school about the start day being (today). I was told, patronizingly, that I was "out of touch" with claims this was announced everywhere. The only place myself and other community watchers have seen it (was Tuesday) in The Citizen.
I am in touch, but to be patronized is inappropriate. Everyone else was in school in this country except our district.
The biggest problem is that the school district is not "in touch" with parents. We are not treated respectfully by school staff, sometimes being not-so-subtly told we know very little about our own children.
For what it is worth, I have two degrees, one in education. I am not interested in working in schools and chose another career path, but that does not make me ignorant, as the staff sometimes treats me and other parents. I am ashamed at how disrespectfully we as parents are treated; without our kids, they would not have employment.
I am fed up with staff acting like this change is something everyone knew. I did not.
Also, the first day of school needs to be a full day, not two hours. Only in B.C., I guess. Other provinces have already shelled out the staff salaries, so why not get our money's worth. They send their kids for a minimum full day and they also educate till 3:30 p.m., not 2:30, and give students enough time to eat their lunch. Here, we waste our tax dollars on two hours for the first day. Why bother sending them?

Getting To Know You Day!

Pull that hair out of your ass, Charlene! Parents have been complaining about this (the short first day) since time immemorial. As far as you feeling patronized by the staff, get used to it. It was the first day of school for them, as well, and I am sure that they were feeling a little "stressed" too.

"get used to it"
written by Sojourn , September 03, 2008 (11:08:38 PM)
This has and is going on through all levels of public employees for quite sometime. Right from the top on down.

People are fed up with the B.S. from those are supposedly working for the people.

Self serving government!

Pull the hair out of your ass? What kind of response is that? Wasn't Tuesday a pro-D day? If so today would have been the teachers second day of school.

Informed???

I've known all summer long that the kids didn't have their first day of school until September 3. It was also advertised for the last three weeks at a minimum on every local radio station. What I find concerning here is a parent chose to write a letter to the Citizen instead of dealing with her personal situation through the school district.

I hope that your school age children do not hear of your post, as it will cause them to disrespect those who are in charge of them during the day.

'Everyone else was in school in this country except our district' is an inaccurate statement. My niece & nephew don't go back to school until next Monday, as most schools in Manitoba are starting back either Friday or Monday.

I give big kudos to the school staff throughout the district who have the task of leading and educating the students. This can be a very thankless and difficult job. Thanks to a very special teacher who after an hour of school is dealing appropriately with a child that was victimizing my younger children.

Everyone gets a notice on the last day of school, the students are told, its in the papers, its on the school districts web site, there is no excuse for not knowing.
Quite frankly I have had enough of parents using school as a glorified daycare. The first day of school is short because they need to do a head count and the teachers can get together and place students.

Honestly Charlene, it sounds like you didnt get the memo or didnt pay enough attention to realize what pretty much EVERYONE else seemed to know and your mad because you had to pick your kid up from your daycare, I mean school, early.

Thank you for your comment, D.K. Ross.
Looking over what I posted, I can see errors. My last Spanish class was more than 30 years ago.
I think "otro gente" should have been "otra gente", and "in sus cartas" should have been "en sus cartas".
I guess I shouldn't get too concerned about some of the postings. People have a right to be concerned about issues and even to take part in heated arguments about them.
I suppose on the first day of school teachers can be under considerable stress trying to keep track of everyone, including many new faces among students, and parents similarly are very concerned for their children in what may be a new environment for them. This is not to mention many of the students themselves who may be shy and trying to make their way through the unfamiliar environment of a school that is new to them.
