BRUSSELS, Belgium - Belgian authorities issued a safety alert Friday after discovering a leak of radioactive material from a research institute.
The research facility is near the southern city of Charleroi, about 65 kilometres south of Brussels, the capital. The Belgian nuclear control agency and the Interior Ministry have warned people living in and near the town of Fleurus not to consume locally grown fruit, vegetables or dairy products as a precaution
The agency said Friday the leak of radioactive iodine, used in medical research, occurred three days ago.
It described the size of the leak as "very small."
Authorities are still investigating what caused the leak.
