Award-winning author Jean Barman will be giving a slide-show presentation and signing copies of her new book, British Columbia: Spirit of the People, at Books and Company on Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
To celebrate 150 years since the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia, the provincial government commissioned Harbour Publishing to produce this commemorative coffee-table book, which explores the history of B.C.’s 10 diverse regions.
Barman, a noted B.C. historian, is the author of six previous books, including the B.C. bestseller The Remarkable Adventures of Portuguese Joe Silvey and Stanley Park’s Secret, winner of the 2006 City of Vancouver Book Prize. Barman’s dedicated efforts to understand and uncover the history of B.C. has earned her a position as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
The text of British Columbia: Spirit of the People is ambitious in scope. Barman delves into B.C.’s history and geography as she explores the province, region by region. The book looks at the different geographic regions, with sections devoted to Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, the Okanagan-Boundary, the Southern Interior, West and East Kootenay, the Central Coast, the Northwest, the Central Interior and the Northeast. From the large stretches of open range and grassland of the Southern Interior, to the rugged geography of the Kootenays and Coast Mountains, to the verdant beauty of the Gulf Islands and the excitement of the province’s cities and communities, each of B.C.’s regions offer unique local characteristics and cultural flavour.
