The Bear Lake woman rescued from a burning home Aug. 26 remains in intensive care in Vancouver, but is doing much better than expected. Emma (Sandy) Browne is now alert and able to do written communication with the nurses at Vancouver General Hospital, said Lori Browne, Emma's sister-in-law, who lives in Abbotsford. "She's still on a respirator because of the lung damage from smoke inhalation and she has second-degree burns to her feet and hands," Lori said. "Doctors won't say when she could be discharged, but she is doing much better than expected and has been able to visit with her children." Browne, in her early 40s, has four children ranging from three to 10 years who are staying with relatives, and have been registered in school. "We want the children's school friends to know the kids are OK," said Lori. Browne was rescued from the burning home by Ratko Djuric and Barry Nilson, who both work at Canfor Polar Forest Division. Together the two dragged the unconscious woman out of the fire and are being credited with saving her life. The children, who were away at the time of the fire, have received all the donations needed of clothing, backpacks, toys and more. "Just everything they need," said Lori.
