Alex Wright will have to try and make his mark as a Western Hockey League goaltender south of the border. The Prince George Cougars ended speculation whether the 18-year-old Prince George-born Wright would find a home on the Cats roster when they traded him Thursday to the Spokane Chiefs. The six-foot-two, 190-pound Wright, who played one game last season for the Regina Pats before being sent to the Cariboo Cougars major midget team. The Chiefs acquired him in exchange for a conditional choice in the 2009 bantam draft. "We wanted to give Alex an opportunity to compete for a spot in the WHL," said Cougars general manager Dallas Thompson. The Cougars will be in St. Albert for pre-season games Sunday against Swift Current and Labour Day Monday against Regina. Wright, who helped backstop the Cariboo Cougars to their first B.C. Major Midget Hockey League title last season, will join the Chiefs in Everett, Wash., where Spokane is involved in the six-team Silvertips tournament along with Everett, Seattle, Portland and Tri-City. The Chiefs face Everett Friday night.
