VANCOUVER - A pick-up truck crashed through the front plate glass window of a busy sushi restaurant in a Maple Ridge, B.C., shopping mall at dinner time on Thursday, killing two women.

RCMP say three other people were taken to Royal Columbian hospital in critical condition. Two other people were injured but with less serious injuries. The 51-year-old driver is in custody but it is not known what, if any, charges he will face.

Candice Denoni was walking from a nearby hair and body spa when she saw the blue truck speed into the Halu Sushi restaurant just after 6 p.m.

Reports said as many as 45 people were in the restaurant at the time. Wtinesses said the truck travelled right through the restaurant and ended up in the kitchen, scattering diners as it crashed into tables and chairs.

Denoni said it didn't look like an accident because the driver appeared to make no effort to slow down.

"It looked like it was purposeful. It was going very fast," she said. "I don't know if he (the driver) fell asleep, but there were no brakes."

She said people came running out of the mall's stores following the crash, and some restaurant patrons were on the ground screaming and crying.

Another witness, an unidentified man, told a similar story.

He said it seemed like the driver of the truck made no effort to slow down.

The names of the dead have not been released.
